A VISIT FROM DOLLY MOMMAS

Busy time of year approaching for everyone I wanted to jump on and tell you about some new people you will see at our SMALL BUT MIGHTY LOCAL MARKET 9924 Bilnoski Rd in Willis on November 20 from 2-5. We again will have our customary local meat, vegetable, honey, mushroom and egg producers but I decided it would also be a good time to showcase some of the local craftsmen and women and encourage you to consider their products for your holiday gifting.

I want to start off by introducing you to a charitable group that will be there selling doll clothes (see past examples of their work above) to raise funds for their important service. I will let the president of the group Kathleen Gidney tell you about them.

"We call our group THE DOLLY MOMMAS and we sew tote bags and doll clothes that are donated to girls who have been brought to Montgomery County Children's Advocacy Center - Children's Safe Harbor, an organization working to end child sexual abuse and trauma. (edited to add here that one hundred and twenty (120) of these dolls have been donated since the beginning of this year alone.)

Each girl is given the choice of doll dressed in a “party” dress and each handmade tote contains a box with extra shoes, hairbrush and jewelry. Also included are shorts and top, skirt and top, leggings and top, jeans and top all these items come with a hair ornament. Pj’s, backpack, purse, poncho or sweater, hat and quilt with a matching pillow are also included. Each item is hand made by a group of very gifted ladies.

We usually meet once a month at Sew and Vac in Conroe for a workshop where we work on various items related to this project and the ladies also sew many of the items at home supplying all the Velcro, elastic, fabrics and trims from their own supplies."

The doll clothes are designed to fit an 18 inch doll and what better way is there to not only shop local but to also know that the money generated from the sales of these items will remain local going toward the purchase of more dolls, fabrics and notions needed to complete the gifts for girls right here in Montgomery, San Jacinto and Walker Counties. Dolly Mommas will accept personal checks or cash for any purchases or donations they are not prepared to accept electronic transactions.
