SEASONAL DAIRYING

Updated: Oct 20, 2021

Our regular customers are aware that we are a seasonal dairy which means we milk 10 months of the year and then for two months we are *dry* to allow all the employees time to recover and rest before calving. We continue to bring all the cow's into the holding area and milking stanchions each morning where they receive their portion of alfalfa pellets as this is a routine they are expecting and it makes for a less stressful start of each new milking season. This is a very busy time of year for us though as we need to prepare the pastures for winter grazing. Step1 order and bring in three tons of seed to plant Step2 mow the fields Step3 have the fields disced, not once but twice, to slow all growth of summer grasses Step4 roll the pastures to smooth the field Step5 hire help to drill the seed then stand back and watch the weather hoping for rain, not too much, not too little, a nice cool snap to stop the remaining warm weather grass from growing accomplish this all by the start of October. As I wrote this I must tell you the dairyman is very happy which means this mission accomplished
